"Millions of children are exposed to smoke in their homes. We must save them because we cannot fully rely on government regulations"
Fuad Baradja, head of education and information at the Indonesian Smoking Control Foundation

There are thought to be at least 43 million children in Indonesia exposed to secondhand smoke at home, giving them a higher risk of lung cancer and other tobacco-related diseases, according to activists. (Source : Jakarta Post)

R.I to provide phone links to all villages
The Indonesian government wants to provide telephone links to all villages in the country by the end of 2008. A total of some 38,000 villages -- more than half of Indonesia's 70,000 -- were still without phone links said Communications Minister Muhammad Nuh. (Forbes)

NEW PLAN TO REPLACE BAJAJ
The city administration will continue replacing old and rusty bajaj (three-wheeled pedicabs) with eco-friendly models fueled by compressed-natural gas (CNG), Governor Sutiyoso announced. There are 14,424 bajaj operating in the capital. The administration says that of all the vehicles in Jakarta, bajaj produce the worst gas emissions. The CNG-fueled bajaj cost Rp 36.5 million each. J ust before I left for Bali, I attended a presentation that BuGils sponsored. Organised by Equinox Publishing, I learned about Al Gore’s scary facts on global warming. Indonesia had the fastest pace of deforestation in the world between 2000-2005, with an area of forest equivalent to 300 soccer pitches destroyed every hour. With this fact, Indonesia finally made it into the Guinness Book of World records. At one point in the presentation, the presenter showed a map of Holland and what would happen to it, if the water would rise by just one meter or so. First Friesland, up in the north of Holland, would completely dissappear. I was shocked! Our fights for freedom, our Frisian cows: everything under water within 50 years! One big blue dot continued to spread over the big screen, absorbing the rest of The Netherlands in just 5 seconds. I expected a loud applause or even a cheer from the Indonesian crowd, while the water creeped in over the lowlands, the homebase of their old colonial master. But, no.... I only heard a soft ‘kasian....’ from an elderly woman in the seat in front of me. What a great meaning Indonesians give to forgiveness, I thought...

After seeing this presentation I felt guilty in a way and realised I had to do something. IF my newsletter can in any way help to protect the environment, I should do so. I came up with a simple but possible effective plan.

Thinking about this plan at the pool side of the pleasant Hotel Harris in Bali, two young Australian blokes jumped loudly into the pool, clearly out to impress two local girls that were sitting kneeled and fully dressed up against a wall in the shadow. They covered their faces, trying to protect themselves from the gushing water. One of the two Australians apologised after noticing me drying off my laptop with a towel. ‘Sorry mate...’, he said. Not sure if he meant it or not, but I waved it off. The other started cleaning his throat, loud, dirty and long. After a short silence and a deep breath, he spitted a long green phlegm a few meters behind me. Now the other one started a well. They obviously had had a big one. The two girls, still in their clubbing outfit from the night before, looked with wide open eye balls at the two giant bules and pulled their leggs further up, trying to hide deeper into the shadow of the wall. ‘These girls want money for the taxi, but we told them to go home on a bus. Much cheaper. But they don’t want to...’, the biggest of the two explained me in a gutteral voice. He shrugged his shoulders with an innocent expression on his face. I hadn’t said a word yet. ‘Are you staying here alone?’ the other one wanted to know. They had seen me already for a few days, but only on the laptop and never with somebody. Before I could answer, they suddenly coughed and both cleaned their throats again. ‘Mate, maybe we should not ask too many questions...’ his friend replied before I could tell them that I was actually waiting for 70, mostly young and wild, Jakarta girls. They probably would have thought that I was talking nonsense anyway. They both climbed out of the water, to waterbomb the two girls again. One girl stood up and pointed to her forehead. She pulled the other one up by the arm and they headed angrily for the exit.

Bali is back in business for sure. The traffic in the Kuta and Legian areas is worse than ever before. There is lot of building going on and the price of nasi goreng is back to 25.000 rp in many places. In the meanwhile the mess on the roadside starts to grow again.

My plan is to create an awareness program in which all the TV stations join. By showing every evening simultously at all TV channels 30 seconds clips on why and how the people can help to save the environment, we can reach the masses. I know I have a lot of readers who are in the advertising and film making industry, and I would love to discuss ideas with them. Creating awareness and responsibility. Throw your plastic bottles out of the car from your left window, but the empty cola cans through your right windows. Make it easy for the recyclers. Most difficult will it be to get the TV stations to participate in this. If there is anybody out there who thinks he can help me with this, please contact me. WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING.

It was 3 o’clock in the morning when I heard shouting, screaming and a few loud bangs, probably of chairs falling over. It was from the room above me. I recognised the voice of one of the Aussie boys. ‘YOU GO HOME! ME NO WANT! NO HAVE!’, he shouted. There was obvious a dispute, but this time the woman involved was not planning to leave before she would get some kind of compensation for whatever she had done, if anything at all. ‘I CALL MY BROTHERS’ FRIENDS!’, the girl shouted loudly. ‘I CALL THE POLICE!’ the guy shouted back. A last loud bounce of a door, the aggressive clicks of high heels down the concrete stairs and the quietness of the Bali night returned.

The next morning the guys were sitting at the pool side, pale faced, smoking a cigarette. They looked even more wasted the night before as I continued with my master plan to save Indonesia. One of the awareness clips needs to be about planting trees, I thought. 200 million people should plant a tree on a certain day. 200 million people should collect one bag of garbage a certain day, in one effort, all together. 200 million people should turn off 2 electric things in their house at the same time. Next to me the Aussie boys started cleaning their throats, again. Both at the same time. One jumped in the pool. Water overflooded the pool, into the pathway. All Australians should stay on their surfboard in the sea and throat scraping is only allowed 50 meters away from the coast. This, I told the guy still sitting on a bench. He looked at me with red eyes. ‘What do you mean?’, he asked. “I am working on the environment”, I proudly told him. He blankly stared at me for a few seconds. ‘Good luck mate..’, and turned around in a state of confusion and indifference.

BUSINESS AS USUAL IN JAKARTA NIGHTLIFE...

It will be business as usual in BuGils, Cazbar and Eastern Promise this weekend, but as soon as the doors close on Saturday night (read: Sunday morning), 70 staff members will go straight to airport. While Bartele was on Bali already, he tried to get some activities organised, that inlcuded rafting, para-sailing and team building games. In a secret meeting of representatives of the 3 bars back in Jakarta, this has now all been cancelled. There are tours to Kintamana Mountain and a holy temple but both times they included Sukawati on the track. Sukawati to bule's, is a huge kampung where they sell all the dump that they can not sell on Kuta beach, but for tourists from Jakarta this place is more important than temples, let only floating on a river in a boat. In the meanwhile the bars stay open back in Jakarta, relaying on ex-employees and with support of staff from Cafe De Hooi and the One Tree Bar.

Lonely classes for solo student in Indonesia
Jakarta - While other children his age attend overcrowded schools elsewhere in Indonesia, a six-year-old in easternmost Papua has an entire school for himself, a report said on Tuesday. The boy, Alen, is the sole pupil at the state primary school of Mapia on a Pacific Ocean island off Papua province's north coast, the Kompas newspaper reported. Charles Faidiban, who acts both as principal and the only teacher, said that when he was assigned to the school for the group of Mapia islands in March, he arrived to find just five children. But four of them moved shortly afterwards, leaving the three-room school building dedicated to the one remaining pupil - Alen. - AFP

  FROM READERS

Dear Mr. Bart,
My name is Marc and I have been patronizing De Hooi during the past few months. Allow me to extend my warmest compliments to you for a great establishment. I am so grateful that such a cozy pub exists near to where I live (Ciputat) and the staff inside always make me feel as if I were a superstar. I understand that there are some difficulties lately therefore, I wanted to offer my support to you and your staff. I have always been treated with respect and courtesy while drinking/eating there and the wireless internet is an added bonus (and is faster than at my house). Your staff greets me by name each time I enter the bar and it is the only place I frequent in town where this happens. I always feel very welcome. Keep up the good work and a huge bravo from me!
Warmest Regards,
Marc

Hi Bartele,
My husband, my two years old boy and myself are moving from the U.S to Jakarta. We are looking for a nice place to live. Could you give us some advise regarding some good neighborhoods. Which areas are nice to live over there. We do not want to live so far from Jl. Gatot Subroto, where my husband will be working.
I am looking forward for your answer.

Hey Bart!
I got your letter somewhere in between the Komodo islands, sitting at MOANA,
enjoying the sunset. I don´t know, was it your amusing story about the Scott, the great sunset or the Coral Trout (a 4* Groper) I just shot for dinner, that make me more
smile.. ;) Good that you´r back, I love to get the newsletter here on the outer
islands! Thanks man for doing this great job. Greetings from MOANA team, we are doing well too! Best fishes,
Josch

..........................

Dear Bartele,
It is good to see that you got the newsletter back on track again. In the recent past I enjoyed reading it. I just got home (the Netherlands) from a month's holiday in Indonesia. I spent, of course, some time touring on Bali, attended a nice traditional Javanese wedding ceremony in mid Java, which all in all took more than one and a half week, and finally spent a couple of days in Jakarta. I hadn't been in Jakarta for about 5 years, but what a differences there are now, with a lot of new big apartment- and office buildings as well as new big shopping malls all over the place. Although, going away from Sudirman, Thamrin or Rasuna Sahid, the kampongs of Jakarta tend to be the same as 30 years ago, when I visited the city for the very first time. I planned to spend a couple of days in Jakarta, also in order to have the opportunity to visit Bugils bar. By the way, I got somewhat of a fright seeing that they are demolishing the building in which Bugils is located; Taman Ria seems to need a facelift, pity that the ship has gone. What are the future plans for the place. Basically it has potential. Are there investors? Sorry, if I bothered you with my small talk, but I had the urge to drop you a note. Good luck with the newsletter, and maybe we will meet in Bugils, or one of the other places, some day soon. Kind regards,
Ron T.

Hi Bart,
A voice from the past to haunt you, but in the nicest possible way I hope!
I can't think of when I last saw a better newsletter from any source, if ever, than your latest one. An absolute MASTERPIECE with the right mix that makes it like a powerful novel you can't put down till you have put it down. Reading this, and knowing your sense of humour is like so many of we Brits and your fellow Dutchmen, you probably think' Jeez, he's pissed" ! Far from it! Stone cold sober. all the better to absorb this mosaic of the starnge world you and I ( and other expats) live in, to the full. Very enjoyable! Whilst clearly battered left, right and center by the events yoiu refer to in the Carlsberg story, you behaved with commendable patience and grace, at least according to the way you describe the night in question. I'm sure I speak for many, some of whom I may not even know, if I say that it will be no big deal for us to have to pay Rp 1,000 extra for a bottle of Carlsberg after having been privileged to read of the fate of the wierd Scotsman who behaved like a lout and ended up proving to astonished bystanders that he was just that - a lout (could just as easily have been a national of any other country) Mind you, its easy for me to say, as I would never drink Carlsberg anyway - its little different from the stuff that poor maid served up to her boss in Hong Kong. In closing, amen to your undoubted success with a BuGils Brew, thus killing two birds with one stone, as we say. You can take Carlsberg off the drinks list, as a reward for their overwhelming generosity for your free flow night, whilst at the same time guarantee that particular piece of flotsam will never darken your doors again in search of‘ the "Really, it’s too expensive’ brew that makes him so pissed. Best,
Bill Guerin

Dear Bartele!
It is very nice to receive your BuGils newsletter again, thank you! I specially like your optimism and your feeling for situations where someone HAS to say something and I like the way you do this: in many ways often not really politically correct or kind to the people involved but -you say the truth. Go ahead and let me smile again each time I read your lines! (...)

Hi Bartele,
It's great to see that you are still going, i actually left Indonesia 4 months ago to reside in Thailand but reading your newsletter brought back great memories of Jakarta. I lived in Aceh for years and used to love my trips to the Big Durian. I plan on going to Bali in early September, do you think that you could postpone your staff trip until then, aku rindu cewek Indonesia and would love to meet you all ; ) Good luck with it all.........

I am so pleased you have started writing again! Every issue is a reminder of what i miss (and sometimes, what I'm glad to be rid of) (...) In your next newsletter, could you ask if anyone knows of CRAIG HUDDLESTON of City Surf or MIKE CROSETTI of Hagler-Bailly? I lost track of these two good friends and miss them a lot. (...)
Jeff Pulice

..........................

Hello Bartele!
It's so good to have you writing again. I was a bit concerned for you and was eagerly waiting your next issue. My wife and I grew up in Indonesia for the first 14 years of our lives (she lived in Madiun and I grew up in Bandung) though we are both bules. It has been over 10 years since we have been back and can't wait to visit. Your bar will certainly be on the top of the list. I am currently living in Colorado and I am very interested in becoming an expat in Indo somewhere. I speak Indonesian fluently and so does my wife. I have an International Business degree and a minor in Marketing. Do you have any suggestions as to what I might do to find a career over there? Keep writing! Your editorials always put a big smile on my face! Are Anchor and Bintang bir still big in Indo? My first beer ever was an Anchor...wish I had tried something else first, hehe. Thanks,
Andrew

Bartele,
Geweldig! Ik ben blij dat je weer terug bent met je nieuwsbrief en je eigen
inbreng in je artikel. Ik heb je gemist en zal je uitleggen waarom en
daarmee ook verkeerde gedachten voorkomen! (...)

Hi Bart,
I like your newsletter. You write very well. It's very very interesting to read up on a bar owner's life in Jakarta. Very funny about the 1,000rp increase on Carlsberg. How are you? By the way, I believe we met maybe 3-5 years ago or so. Now I'm living in Bangkok, Thailand. I have a little vacation rental business with the condos I bought in Jomtien beach in Pattaya, as well www.ViewTalayCondos.com
Take care,

Hi,
Is it my imagination or, in your absence, have you done some introspecting? I absolutely like the slant of reporting towards the more cerebral issues, anti nuclear, animal protection, diseases, etc., but do continue your irreverant humor in reporting the usual bar news. Appreciate your informing and entertaining us who cannot be there to enjoy Indonesia with you.
A fan from the USA.
